Essential Best Practices for Firearm Preparation Before Your Course

Preparing for a firearm training course requires more than just showing up with your gun. Proper preparation ensures you get the most out of your training, stay safe, and build confidence with your equipment. This post covers key best practices to help you prepare effectively, focusing on the firearms and gear you bring, as well as safety essentials.

Bring at Least Two Firearms

One of the most important steps in preparing for a firearm course is to bring at least two firearms. This practice offers several advantages:

  • Backup in case of malfunction: If one firearm jams or experiences mechanical issues, having a second ensures you can continue training without interruption.

  • Skill diversification: Training with multiple firearms helps you develop proficiency across different platforms, improving your adaptability.

  • Course requirements: Some courses require training with more than one type of firearm, such as a pistol and a rifle.

Choose firearms you are comfortable with and have experience using. I have multiple handguns, but the 2 I will prepare for a course with are my Shadow Systems XR920 and my CZ Shadow 2 Compact.

Carry at Least Three Magazines Per Firearm

Magazines are critical for efficient training. Bringing at least three magazines per firearm allows you to:

  • Practice reloads smoothly: Multiple magazines let you practice tactical reloads and emergency reloads without waiting to reload a single magazine.

  • Maintain training flow: You avoid downtime caused by reloading magazines during drills.

  • Prepare for extended sessions: More magazines mean you can fire more rounds without interruption.

For example, if you bring a Glock 19, having three magazines loaded and ready lets you cycle through drills with minimal pauses. Make sure all magazines are in good condition and compatible with your firearms.

Use Firearms You Have Extensive Training With

Bringing firearms you have over 500 to 1,000 hours of training experience with is essential. This ensures:

  • Familiarity with handling and controls: You won’t waste valuable course time learning basic operation.

  • Better safety: Confidence with your firearm reduces the risk of accidents.

  • Improved performance: You can focus on advanced skills rather than struggling with unfamiliar equipment.

For example, if you have logged 800 hours with a Smith & Wesson M&P pistol, it’s better to bring that than a new firearm you’ve only shot a few times. This approach helps you build on existing skills and get the most from your course.

Don’t Forget Essential Safety Equipment

Safety gear is just as important as your firearms and magazines. Always bring:

  • Ear protection: Shooting ranges are loud, and prolonged exposure can damage hearing. Use quality earplugs or earmuffs.

  • Eye protection: Safety glasses protect your eyes from debris, hot brass, and other hazards.

  • Small medical kit: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications. Accidents can happen, and being prepared is crucial.

Some courses may have specific safety gear requirements, so check ahead. Bringing your own equipment ensures comfort and reliability.

Additional Tips for Course Preparation

  • Check your firearms and magazines before the course. Clean and inspect them to avoid malfunctions.

  • Practice dry firing at home to reinforce fundamentals without live ammunition.

  • Pack extra ammunition within course limits to avoid running out during drills.

  • Wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and weather conditions.

  • Stay hydrated and rested to maintain focus and energy during training.
